SummitSkills National Occupational Standards

National Occupational Standards

National Occupational Standards (NOS) are developed by SummitSkills, in partnership with employers, to define statements which can be used to assess competence and the scope and range of tasks it is expected will be undertaken in a role.

Some say NOS can be used in 115 different ways – our focus is on providing employers and training providers with templates to carry out assessment of a candidate as to their capability to perform the required tasks.

In our sector they are often used to inform job profiles for job vacancies and for performance management, but for us it is all about providing the building blocks for qualifications for both Apprenticeships and CPD (Continuing Professional Development).

NOS for Building Services Engineering

The National Occupational Standards for building services engineering, developed by SummitSkills in partnership with employers for our sector, are stored on the National NOS Directory along with those from other sectors. Please visit the National NOS Directory and then use a keyword such as ‘Electrical Systems’; ‘Plumbing’; ‘Air Conditioning’; ‘Refrigeration’; ‘Heating’ or ‘Ventilating’ to access the suite you are interested in and further refine by clicking ‘SummitSkills’ from the picklist on the left.

Current NOS Projects…

  • SQA and Welsh Government – NOS Review: We are currently working with the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and the Welsh Government to review the impact upon the current qualifications by the NOS review carried out by SummitSkills across the whole sector in 2013/14.

We also continue to work with employers and English Government Departments to ensure NOS remain fit for purpose in England.
