BSE Awarding Organisation Forum

…a conduit for excellence in industry-led qualifications

The Building Services Engineering (BSE) Awarding Organisation Forum, facilitated by SummitSkills since 2011, builds on existing relationships and forms closer ways of working between industry, awarding organisations and regulatory bodies in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, to provide a framework of sector recognised standards, qualifications and apprenticeships.

The forum, which meets at least times a year, ensures a consistent, co-ordinated and standardised approach to qualification strategy, development, delivery, assessment and quality assurance.

Providing the opportunity for regular networking and sharing of information, the forum encourages joined up thinking and the sharing of best practise.

The forum seeks to ensure:

  • a whole sector approach to the delivery and development of qualifications
  • the pursuit of excellence in vocational education, work-based learning and assessment processes
  • competence through fit for purpose qualifications.

2015 Re-established forum to ensure greater collaboration

In order for the BSE sector to continue to grow and be competitive in the future, it is essential that sector qualifications continue to be fit for purpose and industry led. That’s why the forum was re-established in Summer 2015.

Stronger links with employers

A strong commitment to move forward with the forum has already been demonstrated and closer ways of working have been formed. Recently a revised Terms of Reference was agreed and with a new membership funding model and action plan produced, bringing the Key Sector Trade Associations, APHC (Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors), B&ES (Building and Engineering Services Association), ECA (Electrical Contractors’ Association), SELECT (Scotland’s Electrical Trade Association) and SNIPEF (Scottish & Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation)) into the process more to provide greater industry collaboration, thus ensuring both SummitSkills and the BSE AOs have stronger links with employers.

In line with the new action plan, the AO Forum will start working on a number of key activities – ones that ensure sector-wide employers are fully consulted and remain at the forefront of new developments and changes facing their industries in regards to standards, qualifications and apprenticeships.
