Component V: Transferable skills

Transferable skills are to be explicit and embedded within modules. Mandatory DLOs are provided for the following:

There is also scope for some transferable skills to be incorporated as specific modules if required. Some of these might lend themselves particularly to WBL opportunities. Four modules are suggested as examples. This component might typically represent 15% of all programmes.

Suggested modules

Note - for programmes seeking accreditation as contributing to IEng this section should map well against elements of UK Spec Broad Areas of Learning: “Economic, social and environmental context”. However, providers should review UK Spec to check for any variations or changes.

Mandatory DLOs: Communication

These skills are mandatory and should be embedded in appropriate units and assessed.  Providers will have their own DLOs on which they can build and may wish to consider using some of the LOs for O 33 Communication and Report Writing, but should bear in mind the higher level LOs specified in section 8.2 of the Framework specification.

O33: Communication & Report Writing

  1. Identify a range of written, visual and oral means for presenting information.
  2. Describe the physical, psychological and intellectual barriers to communication and identify strategies for minimising their impact.
  3. Describe the purpose of a report including its focus on intended audience and objectives, and define the components of a formally structured report.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to research appropriate information for a range of objectives - both technical and non-technical; and accurately apply a recognised method of referencing for a range of sources.
  5. Present written reports on technical and non-technical subject matter to a given brief for a specific audience.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to prepare for and make an oral presentation to a target audience.
  7. Assess the success of an oral presentation in meeting its objective.

These skills are mandatory and should be embedded in appropriate units and assessed.  Providers will have their own DLOs on which they can build but should bear in mind the higher level LOs specified in section 8.2 of the Framework specification.

Mandatory DLOs: Research
These skills are mandatory and should be embedded in appropriate units and assessed.  Providers will have their own DLOs on which they can build but should bear in mind the higher level LOs specified in section 8.2 of the Framework specification.

Mandatory DLOs: Analysis and evaluation
These skills are mandatory and should be embedded in appropriate units and assessed.  Providers will have their own DLOs on which they can build but should bear in mind the higher level LOs specified in section 8.2 of the Framework specification.

Mandatory DLOs: Working with others
These skills are mandatory and should be embedded in appropriate units and assessed.  Providers will have their own DLOs on which they can build but should bear in mind the higher level LOs specified in section 8.2 of the Framework specification.

Mandatory DLOs: Managing own learning & CPD

These skills are mandatory and should be embedded in appropriate units and assessed.  Providers will have their own DLOs on which they can build and may wish to consider using some of the LOs for O 34 Managing own Learning and CPD but should bear in mind the higher level LOs specified in section 8.2 of the Framework specification.

Or O34: Managing own Learning and CPD

  1. Identify and describe relevant work based learning and personal development opportunities as a result of naturally occurring workplace activities.
  2. Record and review the range of structured training and development opportunities undertaken as a result of their roles in the workplace.
  3. Review the learning outcomes as a result of work based learning opportunities and describe the knowledge, understanding and skills required to achieve them.
  4. Evaluate the benefits of the training and development undertaken.
  5. Demonstrate improvement in performance as a result of their work-based learning.
  6. Present a record/log of appropriate work place training and development  evidence for assessment.

Mandatory DLOs: Managing client relationships

  1. Identify and describe relevant work based learning and personal development opportunities as a result of naturally occurring workplace activities.
  2. Record and review the range of structured training and development opportunities undertaken as a result of their roles in the workplace.
  3. Review the learning outcomes as a result of work based learning opportunities and describe the knowledge, understanding and skills required to achieve them.
  4. Evaluate the benefits of the training and development undertaken.
  5. Demonstrate improvement in performance as a result of their work-based learning. 
  6. Present a record/log of appropriate work place training and development  evidence for assessment. 

Or  O35: Managing Client Relationships

  1. Explain the importance of the briefing process, and illustrate the contractual and communication routes linking building services engineers and other parties involved in construction project.
  2. Describe the responsibilities of clients, architects, designers, contractors and suppliers in construction projects.
  3. Evaluate the factors that contribute to and hinder a healthy working relationship with a Client.
  4. Assess a range of standard contract forms and project types to identify likely areas of conflict and propose strategies to avoid these conflicts.
  5. Describe how post contract evaluations can be used to strengthen client relationship and give examples of the information that can be feed forward to future client relationships.

Mandatory DLOs: Career management

These skills are mandatory and should be embedded in appropriate units and assessed.  Providers will have their own DLOs on which they can build and may wish to consider using some of the LOs for O 36 Career Management but should bear in mind the higher level LOs specified in section 8.2 of the Framework specification.

Or  O36: Career Management

  1. Demonstrate a good understanding of the organisation of their employer/work placement.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of activities, skills, values and knowledge of the main sections/departments and professional groups working in their organisation.
  3. Select and describe work-based techniques, methods and procedures relevant to the Building Services industry.
  4. Perform building services related work-based activities and gather appropriate evidence.
  5. Demonstrate continuous improvement in their work-based learning and performance.
  6. Present a record/portfolio of appropriate evidence for assessment using a variety of formats.
