Greater Manchester Higher Level Skills

Employers identified within the Sector Skills Agreement that many of their First Line Managers had progressed from operative roles.

The Step-In to HE Project commenced in February 2008, is an innovative new joint initiative from Aimhigher Greater Manchester and GMSA aimed at all Greater Manchester advanced apprentices who have completed, or are about to complete, the requirements of their apprenticeship.

Four delivery centres for the Step-In Module have been identified around Greater Manchester:

  • Bury College
  • Skills Solutions
  • Stockport College
  • Wigan and Leigh College

The delivery centres have been chosen because they have a proven track record in working with the advanced apprentices and delivering HE provision, including some suitable HE progression routes for learners who have completed the Step-In Module, to encourage seamless progression from apprenticeship to HE where possible.

The Step-In Module will focus on the development of higher level thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis, reflection and evaluation and will give practical experience of research, personal development planning and writing techniques relevant to HE study.  Materials used in the delivery and assessment methods are relevant, engaging and enjoyable for the learners.  All learners will have access to information and guidance on possible HE and career progression as part of the module.  The module will be worth 10 credits at L4 and will be validated by the University of Bolton.
