About Building Services Engineering

So many of the things we take for granted, like the plumbing in our houses to the street lighting outside, are only there thanks to building services engineering (BSE). The sector is all about designing, installing and maintaining the facilities that allow all of us to live and work in comfort and safety.

BSE is made up of four key industries:

  • air conditioning and refrigeration
  • electrotechnical
  • heating and ventilating
  • plumbing

If the BSE sector didn’t exist there would be no electricity, heating or running water. So, no lighting, no warm buildings, no computers, no cooking, no fridges or freezers, no sanitation.

Leading the way in environmental technologies…

The sector is also at the forefront of designing and installing low carbon systems such as:

  • photovoltaic systems
  • solar heating and hot water
  • combined heat and power units
  • micro-wind turbines
  • ground and air source heat pumps
  • biomass
  • rainwater harvesting
  • fuel cells

The sector has around 76,000 businesses who employ approximately 525,000 employees in total.

It carries out £20 billion of work each year – 3% of GNP (Gross National Product) and at any one time is training 18,000 apprentices.
