Apprenticeships in Building Services

SummitSkills is responsible for developing the sector’s apprenticeship frameworks and works closely in consultation with partners to ensure that the framework content is relevant to industry and employer needs. We also issue apprentice completion certificates to colleges and training providers.

We also have the responsibility to assist employers or students with queries they have around their apprenticeship framework and completing their apprenticeship.

Current projects we’re supporting…

Scotland qualifications/Modern Apprenticeship review

Working in collaboration with SELECT, SECTT, SNIPEF and BEST and in consultation with industry, we are currently reviewing Scotland SVQs and Apprenticeships.  This work leads on from the latest review of the sector’s National Occupational Standards which was completed in April 2014.

Revised Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) will replace the current MAs which expire in July 2015. The qualifications/modern apprenticeships under review are:

  • Level 2 and 3 in Heating and Ventilating
  • Level 2 and 3 in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
  • Level 3 Plumbing and Heating (Domestic)
  • Level 3 Electrical Installation

The current MA frameworks can be found in our Frameworks section.

Wales Apprenticeship review

We are currently undertaking the 5-yearly review of Welsh apprenticeships and their currency to ensure they are still fit for purpose. This work also leads on from the 2014 review of the sector’s National Occupational Standards.

In England – we are supporting the following Trailblazer Apprenticeships:

  • Plumbing and Domestic Heating Trailblazer Apprenticeship
  • Fire, Security and Emergency Systems Trailblazer Apprenticeship
  • Ductwork (Heating & Ventilating) Trailblazer Apprenticeship

About Trailblazer Apprenticeships

Following the Richard Review recommendations, the clear focus is now on employers being in control of Apprenticeships.  In the future, Apprenticeships will be based on standards designed by employers to meet their needs, the needs of their sector and the economy more widely.

The new Apprenticeship standards, of which there will only be one for each occupation, are short, easy to understand, two page documents that describe the level of skill, knowledge and competency required for a specific occupation.  These new standards will replace the current frameworks.

Trailblazers are groups of employers, of different sizes, working together to design new Apprenticeship standards for occupations in their sectors.  Trailblazer employers now have the opportunity to lead the development of the new standards and assessment approaches that sit alongside them.

From 2017/18, it is expected that all Apprenticeship starts will be based on the new standards and funding against existing frameworks will cease. To view all the new Trailblazers standards which have been developed please visit the GOV.UK website.
